#1 Wheel of Time

The Lord of the Rings and Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series share a striking resemblance due to the presence of fantastical beings, perilous situations, and powerful forces of evil. Because of how time works in the books, the series of high fantasy novels take place in an unnamed world. This is because the passage of time in the books is circular.

New Spring, the prequel book to the series, is set during the Aiel War and walks you through the events leading to the end of the war and the ground-breaking discovery created by the Aes Sedai. This book takes place during the time in which the series is set.

#2 The Chronicles Of Prydain

The Lord of the Rings-esque Chronicles of Prydain, written by Lloyd Alexander, has a bit more comedy than Tolkien’s classic and is entertaining for both older and younger readers. The events of the narrative take place in Prydain, a region of medieval fantasy that is home to powerful sorcerers and rulers, as well as ancient prophesies and mighty warriors. Does anything ring a bell?

The main character of the story is a young man named Taran who takes care of pigs but has aspirations of leading an exciting life. As he continues on his journey, Taran learns valuable lessons and makes lifelong allies along the way as he becomes sucked into the conflict between good and evil.

#3 The Demon King

It’s a narrative of Hans, a former criminal who has changed and wants to help out his family in any way he can. Since a curse stops him from ever taking off his silver cuffs and selling them, Hans has worn them for all of his days in prison. The cuffs have become an integral part of his identity as he ages.

In a scene reminiscent of the Frodo–Will interaction in Lord of the Rings, Han, and his companion Dancer stumble upon three wizards who were using a magical necklace to set the Hanalea hill on fire. Han defeats the wizards in a fight for the amulet.

#4 The Ill-Made Mute

The main character of this book is an amnesiac who discovers that he has awakened in a place he has never been before and is soon disfigured by a poisonous plant. You will go on an adventure alongside the protagonist as they search for a cure while also striving to determine who they are and where they originated from. Cecilia Dart-Thornton is going to be your travel companion on your adventure.

The Ill-Made Mute is not an exception to the norm that novels like Lord of the Rings usually include a splash of romance to spice up the action of the story. This rule is true throughout the entirety of the Lord of the Rings series, including The Ill-Made Mute. Discover the secrets that are eventually revealed to the protagonist as they progress through the novel in search of their authentic selves, and enjoy the ride as you do so!

#5 Legend of Drizzt: Homeland

The book takes you to the deepest parts of the underworld and explains to you how a lonely drow was able to escape, leaving behind a terrible community and a family that wished to murder him. It also tells you how he was able to do so without being killed.

Drizzt is the third son of Zaknafein, a renowned weapon master, and Malice, his mother. Since Drizzt is the third son, drow custom dictates that he must be offered as a sacrifice to Lolth, the wicked spider queen, in order to appease her. However, his elder brother unexpectedly passed away, and this meant that he would not have to make the sacrifice. Unfortunately, this causes Drizzt’s family to be displeased.

#6 A Wizard of Earthsea

As you read Ursula K. Le Guin’s A Wizard of Earthsea, you’ll be reminded of Gandalf’s character several times. Ged, a teenage wizard, realizes that he has a natural gift for magic. Kvothe’s life is broken up into portions in the novel by Patrick Rothfuss. When you read how Kvothe was orphaned and forced to live as a street urchin, your heart will shatter. When Kvothe returns to music after spending much of his life traveling and singing with gypsy-like folk groups, the second part of this story follows.

#8 The Dragon Sword and Wind Child

Noriko Ogiwara’s The Dragon Sword and the Wind Child, a Newbery Honor novel, is a great alternative to The Lord of the Rings. Toyoashihara, a region where the Goddess of Darkness and the God of Light have waged battle for thousands of years, is the setting of the narrative.
