Synopsis

Erika Hanover received her magic on her twelfth birthday—far earlier than anyone was supposed to—and suddenly, everything in her life made sense. Magic could solve everything. Magic was all she’d ever wanted.

When she was offered a spot on the roster of a mercenary group policing magic-tinged crime in her home of upstate New York, she jumped at the chance. Anything to get away from her hometown. It didn’t matter what the work was. She didn’t care.

Now, though, with almost a decade between herself and her time as a child soldier with the Radiant, things aren’t as clear as they used to be. Alexa isn’t perfect. Far from it. She’s clever but burdened with trust issues, hubris, and greed. And she doesn’t start strong. She doesn’t gain her powers until a quarter into Act I, and even then, she fumbles more than she flourishes: building tools, not dominance. Her real magical growth doesn’t begin until midway through Act II, when the story’s pace and stakes surge.

The magic system is anything but ordinary. Forget fireballs. Think salt-armored warriors, flesh-twisting tentacles, or symphonies turned into weapons. Battles are fast, brutal, and surprising, with real consequences. Characters die. Sometimes even those you thought untouchable.

The world unfolds in layers: Earth as we know it, and Ideworld, where myths, dreams, and nightmares rule. The deeper introduction to Ideworld’s ruling powers and factions doesn’t fully arrive until Act II, but once it does, the scope widens dramatically.

What ties it all together is Alexa’s voice: humor laced with cynicism, keeping the story sharp even when the stakes turn deadly. The cast around her is just as layered: flawed, human, and compelling. No caricatures.

An Unwilling Monster

In the city of Kholakel, the highlight of the year for the upper classes is the annual monster pacification of the misty woods. Ostensibly it's a culling of the monster population to prevent them encroaching on urban areas, but it's an open secret that it's actually treated as more of a blood sport, the participants competing to score the most kills. After all, why else would the politicians and elites of the city bother to attend personally?

Given the intense competition and high-tech weapons and gear in use, one might wonder how the forest has not yet been completely depopulated. As this year's culling approaches, a group of unfortunate children are about to discover the answer first-hand, but thanks to an unexpected twist of fate, one of them will score the chance to play the role of the hunter instead of the prey.

This was an attempt at writing something darker than my usual fare. The story I actually ended up with isn't as mean to the MC as I'd originally planned out, to the point that I'm not sure the story deserves the horror/grimdark tags anymore, but this is still an unfair world with unambiguously evil antagonists. Chapters are short to start with, but get longer once the first act is over.

Struggling to keep her job, her dignity, and a roof over her head, AJ’s life is spiraling out of control as she picks up ever-odder jobs. Anything will do if it saves her from having to work again as a part-time stripper or, worse, move back in with her parents.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

I'll admit that the above synopsis is a little inadequate to describe a story that has, since its inception, evolved into an odyssey of misadventure involving an Average Jane trying to get her shit together before the full moon.

But I like keeping it around, if only for posterity—it was this very prompt that got me writing in the first place, after all.

Once Wolf for Hire nears completion (or, at least the first installment, if it continues to garner strong support), I intend to make numerous revisions and edits it in preparation for proper publication. And that includes the synopsis.
