Synopsis

Allison Jane Avery (AJ) is a recent accounting graduate juggling mundane jobs to afford rent, car payments, and massive student loans. Stuck in a cycle of financial instability, AJ’s life takes a turn when a wild night out leads to an even wilder morning—waking up naked in a park with a mysterious tramp stamp and the unsettling realization that she’s become a werewolf. Not the bloodthirsty Hollywood werewolf that hunts under the moon, but one content with stalking stray animals and digging through trash.

AJ’s more concerned about dealing with the fallout of turning into a mindless creature every month—from losing her favorite pajamas to repeated offenses of public indecency and trespassing. The judge warns she’s one misdemeanor shy of a felony, and her landlord is evicting her for violating her lease’s “No Pet” policy. Struggling to keep her job, her dignity, and a roof over her head, AJ’s life is spiraling out of control as she picks up ever-odder jobs. Anything will do if it saves her from having to work again as a part-time stripper or, worse, move back in with her parents.

AUTHOR’S NOTE:

I’ll admit that the above synopsis is a little inadequate to describe a story that has, since its inception, evolved into an odyssey of misadventure involving an Average Jane trying to get her shit together before the full moon.

But I like keeping it around, if only for posterity—it was this very prompt that got me writing in the first place, after all.

Once Wolf for Hire nears completion (or, at least the first installment, if it continues to garner strong support), I intend to make numerous revisions and edits it in preparation for proper publication. And that includes the synopsis.

Alexa isn’t perfect. Far from it. She’s clever but burdened with trust issues, hubris, and greed. And she doesn’t start strong. She doesn’t gain her powers until a quarter into Act I, and even then, she fumbles more than she flourishes: building tools, not dominance. Her real magical growth doesn’t begin until midway through Act II, when the story’s pace and stakes surge.

The magic system is anything but ordinary. Forget fireballs. Think salt-armored warriors, flesh-twisting tentacles, or symphonies turned into weapons. Battles are fast, brutal, and surprising, with real consequences. Characters die. Sometimes even those you thought untouchable.

The world unfolds in layers: Earth as we know it, and Ideworld, where myths, dreams, and nightmares rule. The deeper introduction to Ideworld’s ruling powers and factions doesn’t fully arrive until Act II, but once it does, the scope widens dramatically.

What ties it all together is Alexa’s voice: humor laced with cynicism, keeping the story sharp even when the stakes turn deadly. The cast around her is just as layered: flawed, human, and compelling. No caricatures.

Greetings fellow humans. This is my first story on Royal Road and my first long-term project written in English, so I do hope you will have some mercy in your heart when reading.

So, as you may have understood, this is a story with super-heroes - which is quite ironic for my first story considering all of the other ones planned are fantasy - and as such will take place in a modern-like setting.

Despite dark themes and gory scenes making their way into the story, it is still a super-hero world with the logic that matches, so expect characters to survive nuclear explosions without a scratch and yet to get defeated by a rubber ducky - as well as similar dark humor, thus the comedy part.

Hopefully, she can solve these problems before winter arrives so she can get to work on taxation.

Even that last one. Though if they try to do it in her room again, she will not be responsible for her actions...
